What is light therapy?
Light therapy
(also called photobiomodulation) is a therapy that uses precise wavelengths
of light, mainly infrared and red light,
but also yellow, blue, purple, green, cyan, and pink depending
on the desired effect, applied directly to the skin.
These wavelengths are
absorbed by cells and stimulate their natural function,
particularly in the mitochondria (the "energy factories" of the cell).
This mechanism helps support recovery, promote local circulation,
and assist the natural tissue healing process.
It is a non-invasive
approach, without excessive heat or medication, used in both
humans and animals.
How many light therapy sessions can we do?
Goldride products are designed for frequent and safe use. They can be used daily without risk of negative cumulative effects, unlike UV exposure.
In general, we recommend:
- 3 to 5 sessions per week for routine maintenance.
- Daily use during the first few weeks if the goal is more targeted recovery (injury, inflammation, joint discomfort).
- When therapeutic needs are higher, it is possible to perform 2 to 3 treatments per day. The ideal duration for each treatment is generally between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the power used, the device model, and the therapeutic needs of the treated area. It is also recommended to leave a few hours between each session to allow the tissues to respond to the treatment.
The exact duration and frequency may vary depending on the model and the treated area.
What is the difference between pads with PVC and without PVC?
The choice between a PVC or non-PVC device primarily depends on your preferences and intended use.
Without PVC:
- Better light transmission, with a gain of approximately 3 to 5% compared to a PVC coating.
- Softer and more comfortable, it conforms better to body contours.
- Does not stick to the skin and does not have the cold sensation often associated with PVC.
With PVC:
- If you wish to use your device for both yourself and your pet, the model with a PVC coating is generally recommended, as it is easier to clean between uses.
My device is not PVC-coated, can I clean it?
Yes. Even if your device is not PVC coated, cleaning it remains simple and safe.
How do I clean and disinfect my device?
Maintaining your device is simple and takes only a few seconds after each use.
- After each session: wipe the surface with a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth to remove dust, hair or residue
- Deeper cleaning: use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, or an isopropyl alcohol wipe, avoiding any abrasive or bleach-based products
- Never submerge the pad in water or pour liquid directly onto the LEDs, as the device contains sensitive electronic components
- Always unplug the device before cleaning
- Ensure complete drying before storing, in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight
What is the difference between an LED device and a precision lamp?
Both an LED device and a precision lamp use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to produce light for photobiomodulation. The main difference lies in their design, light diffusion, and use.
An LED device is generally designed to cover a larger surface and diffuse light uniformly over an extended area. It can be adapted to treat large regions requiring more global exposure.
A precision lamp also uses LED technology, but its design allows for better light concentration on a targeted area. It can offer higher light intensity over a small surface thanks to adapted optics and diode arrangement.
The choice between the two therefore depends on the area to be treated, the precision sought, the required light intensity, and the protocol used.
What is the difference between a precision lamp and a laser?
Both the precision lamp and
the laser use light in photobiomodulation, but their production technology and their way of
diffusing light are different.
A precision lamp uses
LED diodes that allow a specific area to be targeted while offering a wider and more uniform light diffusion. It is ideal for treating a
precise region while covering a slightly larger surface area.
A laser uses laser
diodes that produce a highly concentrated and directional light beam,
allowing a small area to be targeted with great precision.
The choice between the two depends mainly on
the area to be treated, the desired precision, the necessary power, and the
protocol used. Both technologies can be effective in a photobiomodulation
approach when used with the right parameters.
Are photonic therapy and light therapy the same thing?
Yes. Photonic therapy is a form of light therapy that uses photons, which are particles of light, to stimulate the body's natural processes. The term photonic emphasizes the use of light as an energy source, whereas light therapy is a more common and general term. In practice, these terms are often used interchangeably to refer to the same therapeutic approach.
I have an open wound, can I use light therapy?
Yes, light therapy can promote the natural healing process and tissue regeneration. However, if there is an open wound, make sure it has been properly cleaned, that it is no longer bleeding, and ideally wait 48 to 72 hours before starting treatments. If in doubt or if the wound is large or infected, consult a healthcare professional or a veterinarian.
I or my animal has cancer, can I use light therapy?
If you or your pet have active cancer or a suspicious lesion, never apply light therapy directly to the affected area without the approval of an oncologist or veterinarian. Other parts of the body can generally be treated, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare professional.
I am pregnant or my pet is pregnant, can I use light therapy?
As a precautionary measure, avoid applying light therapy directly to the abdomen during pregnancy without the advice of a healthcare professional or veterinarian. Other body areas are generally considered safe to treat.
I am taking a photosensitizing medication, can I use light therapy?
If you are taking a photosensitizing medication (certain antibiotics, for example), consult a healthcare professional before using light therapy, as this could increase your skin's sensitivity to light and cause a more severe skin reaction.
I suffer from photosensitive epilepsy or my pet has it, can I use light therapy?
If you or your pet suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, consult a healthcare professional or veterinarian before using light therapy. Some of our devices offer a pulsed mode that emits intermittent light. While there is no evidence that this mode systematically triggers seizures, it is recommended to exercise caution and obtain professional advice before using it.
Does light therapy help with arthritis?
Yes, particularly for osteoarthritis (the most common type of arthritis), where research shows interesting effects on pain and mobility in both humans and animals.
Light therapy can help to:
- Relieve joint discomfort
- Reduce stiffness, especially in the morning
- Promote better daily mobility
The best results are obtained with regular use over several weeks (usually 3 to 5 sessions per week).
